CPHS Counselor Named High School Counselor of the Year

This is the image for the news article titled CPHS Counselor Named High School Counselor of the YearDr. Taqua Lewis, counselor at Center Point High School, was named High School Counselor of the Year at The Alabama School Counselor Association Awards Luncheon held in November. The luncheon was held at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel during the annual Alabama Counseling Association Fall Conference. 

Dr. Taqua Lewis is entering her twenty-first year in public education, spending sixteen of those years as a high school counselor. Prior to becoming a high school counselor, Taqua taught sixth grade reading for four years at Daleville Middle School in Daleville, Alabama. She has served as a school counselor at Daleville High School, Homewood High School, Honeysuckle Middle School, Hoover High School Freshman Campus, Pinson Valley High School, and is currently at Center Point High School. She is a certified Franklin Covey Facilitator for the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, and Championing Diversity. Taqua earned her B.S. in Elementary Education, M.Ed. in School Counseling and Educational Leadership from Alabama State University, and her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Jefferson County's Director of School Counseling describes Taqua as "an outstanding leader who brings much energy and expertise to her students as well as her colleagues. Dr. Lewis has always displayed a high degree of responsibility and ambition."

One of her colleagues describes Taqua as "the perfect example of professionalism and innovation...She has the passion, personality, and knowledge base to successfully bridge gaps that may exist between the school and the community."

A parent stated that Taqua has a "desire to perform her job with excellence and demonstrates an unwavering support and commitment to the youth and families she serves. Dr. Lewis was also instrumental in helping our daughters excel and find their voice in student government, volunteerism, and self-worth."

Taqua enjoys spending time with friends and family, including her husband, Eddie, and daughter, Taylor. In her spare time, she enjoys shopping, reading, and line dancing with D2 Line Dancers.
