The Birmingham Association of REALTORS boosts first responders’ safety with life-saving gift of protective vests for Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department School Resource Officers

BIRMINGHAM, AL - (November 2016) - The Birmingham Association of REALTORS® (BAR) has donated funds to pay for body armor vests to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department for use by School Resource Officers (SROs).

This body wear is seven times more effective than Kevlar vests and is lighter weight and more comfortable to wear. The vests include a medical kit. In a crisis/emergency situation, paramedics may enter the scene only after a full clearance, making some law enforcement officers the first responders to victims needing medical attention.

A news conference announcing the gift will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Jefferson County Board of Education. Leaders of the Birmingham Association of REALTORS, the Board of Education and the Sheriff’s Department will be on hand to answer media questions.

“Our members work, reside and worship right here in the Birmingham metropolitan area,” said Cliff Long, CEO of BAR, which has a membership of more than 3,600 from across central Alabama. “Our children learn and our loved ones work in local schools. While we hope School Resource Officers will never have to depend on this type of body armor, we certainly believe these men and women who put their lives on the line for our children should be properly protected.”

Sheriff Mike Hale said, “We thank the Birmingham Association of REALTORS for being a strong community citizen who wishes to keep those people safe who provide protection for all of us, sometimes in extreme conditions.”

Superintendent Craig Pouncey said, “It’s all about the best preparation for the turbulent times we live in, and we accept this extra protection for our SROs with much gratitude.”

“REALTORS don’t just sell residential and commercial property. We sell a way of life,” said 2016 BAR Board President, Dot Mash of LAH. “Crucial to us is being able to feel safe and secure in our homes and in our schools. It’s equally important for our law enforcement officers to feel safe at work.”
