The 3 Ms in Tri-M come from the original honor society name: Modern Music Masters. “Modern” means our society will never grow old as it is continually renewed by new, young members such as today’s inductees. The second M--music is defined as the art of sound that expressed ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. Music was present before there was even language. Thus, music is the universal language. The third M signifies “masters.” In the art field, the title of “master” has been known to signify those who achieve a high degree of proficiency.
